ACTRA Services
Branch Services

ACTRA Maritimes offers a range of services to its members in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

Training opportunities include regular New Member meetings, Acting for Camera/Auditioning classes and the National Apprentice Training program - as well as workshops made available through the Moving Images Group.

The Branch promotes its members through its on-line Talent Directory and the ACTRA Maritimes Voice Talent CD, which is widely distributed to animation, commercial, digital media and documentary producers.

The Branch holds frequent information meetings, which we've termed Hot Button Forums to permit our members to discuss issues with staff and their elected Council. As well, our regular newsletter, Dialogue, also assists in members communicating with members about the issues facing Atlantic Canadian performers.

The Branch offers its boardroom to members for meetings, classes, etc. The room is equipped with a camera, monitor and VCR - which are available for use by members for the making of audition tapes, etc.

And each year, ACTRA Maritimes programs a variety of events for its members as part of the Atlantic Film Festival. These include seminars and the ACTRA Midnight Breakfast - which has become a can't-miss event!

Other social events include the annual ACTRA Awards, the Holiday Family Party and other parties and receptions. We're a fun crowd at ACTRA Maritimes!

National Services

In keeping with its mission, ACTRA negotiates collective agreements on behalf of Members over a range of performance areas. These agreements set out the minimum fees and working conditions for performers. ACTRA staff are always available to enforce the agreements and resolve conflicts between performers and engagers.

Insurance and Retirement Plans

The ACTRA Fraternal Benefit Society (AFBS) administers a health insurance plan to assist with medical and dental expenses, life insurance, and a Registered Retirement Savings Plan. Members, engagers and non-members working within ACTRA jurisdiction all contribute to these funds on a percentage based on fees received under ACTRA collective agreements.

Performers' Rights

ACTRA Performers' Rights Society (PRS) is responsible for the collection and distribution of fees, royalties, residuals fees and all other forms of compensation or remuneration to which members and permit holders of ACTRA and others may be entitled to as a result of their work or engagement in the entertainment and related industries.

Promotion

Nationally and on a Branch-by-Branch basis, ACTRA works vigorously to promote Members and help build the domestic production industry. ACTRA participation in key North American film and television festivals, trade symposia and expositions raises the profile of Members among important audiences.

One of the most important tools ACTRA has to promote its Members is Face to Face Online (open to all ACTRA Members).

Like all ACTRA initiatives, Face to Face Online and the Maritimes Talent Directory are member-driven projects created for the benefit of members.

By itself and in concert with other arts or like-minded organizations, ACTRA pursues the promotion of a Canadian cultural agenda at all levels of government. Rights of the Artist legislation, funding agencies, Canadian content, censorship and broadcast regulations are just some of the public policy issues ACTRA addresses on an ongoing basis.

Formal and informal ties with other Canadian and international labour and arts organizations gives ACTRA members a voice beyond their numbers and borders. Working with organizations in regions of the world where performers are targeted for physical harm or death solely because they are performers helps give context to ACTRA members' domestic lobbying efforts.
